How Often Should You Review Your Goals?

Goals and targets are always something I’ve had a love/hate relationship with.

I like the flow of working free without things having a driving force. I feel more creative that way. They call it going with the flow or following your interests.

But I also love the structure and definability of goals/targets.

Breaking Down Goals

Setting goals, breaking down said goals and giving yourself a list of things to achieve based off those goals is something that can have huge effect on your work achievements.

I’ve used goal setting sporadically over the years especially as I’m working through big busy patches and need to get myself and others aligned.

I find it best to set bigger goals as your yearly or half yearly target. Then break those down into quarterly goals. And then break down those quarterly goals into monthly goals. Then work out what needs to happen for those monthly goals on a week by week basis.

This might seem pretty granular but it helps to be able to see up the chain again when you’re blasting through your weekly work.

How Often Should You Review Your Goals

I normally set yearly goals as the maximum time frame. I find it hard to picture clearly beyond that (maybe I should work harder at that). Yearly seems to be a long enough period that things don’t change so much but long enough that it needs to be planned out.

Recently I’ve been finding myself drifting from my goal process as new projects are meandering and some of the things I set out to do at the start of the year aren’t working out as I expected them to.

This kind of puts me into a very reactive state of mind which isn’t good when you’re going after big goals.

I think reviewing goals is a very personal thing and only you are in the position to know when it’s the right time to schedule a “goal review day” to go back through the process and realign yourself.

I just did one yesterday (and still going today).

Although it takes a whole day out of my schedule, it’s definitely worth the time.

Refocus and Reenergize

The good thing about doing a “goal review day” is that you always feel more in control, refocused and reenergized afterwards.

Planning is something that can really help organise the human mind and I encourage you do one of these days whenever you are feeling out of touch from your goals.
